Welcome Kam Lake Constituents …

This will be my first address within the 17th Legislative Assembly and since the elections in 2011. I am very honored to once again represent Kam Lake residents in the Legislative Assembly. I wish to thank all of the residents who have supported me during the recent election campaign and my appointment as Minister of Transportation and Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment.

As your Member of the Legislative Assembly I will continue to represent the concerns of all constituents seriously and effectively. As a Minister of these Departments, I will also continue to ensure the values and visions of the people of the Northwest Territories are mutually incorporated over the term of the 17th Assembly.

The experiences and exposure I have been given over the years as a Member and as Chairperson for Standing Committees such as Economic Development and Infrastructure will be invaluable as the Executive Council moves our territory forward in a progressive and responsible future. Most importantly, it is the discussions and experiences I shared with my constituents that will provide me with the most valuable source of knowledge and wisdom.

As Canada continues to be impacted by global uncertainty, the Northwest Territories must continue to be innovative, competitive and creative to ensure our future is as prosperous and progressive as our past decade. I for one, will continue to work with organizations and governments to address and explore all possibilities.

If you have any questions or require additional information please call me at 669-2296 or email me at david_ramsay@gov.nt.ca. If you have any photos or short story ideas for our Kam Lake Kronicle contact us.

Sincerely,

Minister Ramsay’s Speech at the CDETNO Reception

Taylor Beck representing the team Northwest Territories in the dog sled race competition, in Whitehorse, Yukon.

Our economy has been one of the strongest in Canada for over a decade. At a time when much of the global economy is stagnating, the northern economy is booming. Some of you here tonight may have heard the recent great reports from the Conference Board of Canada – that Canada’s northern territories will lead the nation in growth in the next two years.

The Northwest Territories economy is forecast to grow by more than seven per cent in 2012 and 2013 – shooting past the Canadian average of two per cent. While we export $2 billion in diamonds every year, much of our mineral wealth remains untapped. Our vast landscape is blessed with an abundance of resources that include diamonds, precious metals, rare earths, oil and natural gas. The potential in our territory’s resource base gives us one of the most favourable long term outlooks in the country.

We also have seven advanced mineral exploration projects in the works, several of which are expected to come on-stream in the next decade. A great example is Avalon Rare Metal’s Nechalacho rare earth elements project near Thor Lake, which is now ranked as the largest rare earth deposit outside of China.

Increased diamond production at Diavik and Snap Lake is helping the territory’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grow by six per cent this year. Our diamond industry is also projected to stay strong, especially with the Gahcho Kue mine production on the horizon. Global demand for diamonds continues to surpass supply.

Mineral exploration spending was also up 30% last year, another fact that bodes well for our investment climate. Further exploration means potential for construction of new mines, more jobs and more economic growth.
